Parenthetical Ideation

Think of what all they (parenthesis) can hold… it could be a gate, an unspoken secret, or the essence of a human being.

Color Icons

Color Icons series is part of my larger Parenthetical Ideation series. Parenthetical Ideation came about when I began obsessively sketching compositions of parentheses and highlighting parenthesis in figural sketches. I was challenging myself to create figural work without using a direct representation of the figure. I began to think about what all parenthesis can hold... it can be a gate, an unspoken secret, or the essence of a human being. Grammatically they are used to provide explanatory information. I use these parenthetical figures to visually provide moments of clarity to the human condition. Color Icons was largely inspired by Kazmir Malevich's Black Square and White on White paintings as well as Mark Rothko's color field work.

Rites

In my more figurative series, I have used imagery that as a whole, speaks about motherhood. Often times society deems giving birth as a rite of passage for a woman. I myself am at the age that I am frequently asked when I am going to find a man and have a kid. My truth is that I am already a mother without giving birth. I was a resource parent for my godsons when they are younger and now, I am their full time live in second mom. In my painting Salvador Tía, la Madre (Savior aunt, the mother) I use a Madona figure to convey these feelings. I portray the figure as an expectant mother who has yet to give birth. Her head is bowed and arms raised in servitude. But the emphasis is on the emotion evoked and not the figure itself. The figure is overlapped by light flares and bubble like sun spots with twinkle patterns of light in the background. The soft color pallet alludes to the hushed feminine tones and warmth of a mother’s comforting voice.

Horizons

These emotional landscapes were brought to life as i struggled to express my anxious excitement and fear of starting a new phase in my life.

In Excess.

These works were experimental explorations in color, composition, and stylistic choices.
